BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

"De-gendering the Fairytale Princess" reflects the current transgender debate. This womenswear collection explores the boundaries of women’s and men’s fashion and projects the ideal of equality and acceptance of all genders, including transgender. The collection breaks down the social construction of gender role identities, by considering what happens when a boy puts on the fairytale princess dress. It is a comment on the social construction of gender roles which are implemented and imposed through clothing. My objective is to create a collection that encapsulates a symbiotic relationship between elements of the masculine and feminine gender identity which is liberated from the social norm where clothing is used to subordinate and limit the agency, rights and equality of women. The collection speaks to future generations about equality and the transgender debate, using fashion as a platform to promote these issues in a positive light. Personal Objective I returned to education to study fashion design having worked as a professional dancer in London’s West End. My aim is to work with a designer where I will be able to contribute to the creative process and development of ideas and the production of a collection. I have a keen interest in surface texture, embellishment and craft. I’m interested in the quality and finishings of luxury garments.
